Agra is the home of the Taj! While that should be sufficient credential by itself to make Agra one of the world’s most sought after tourist destination, there is more to the city than the Taj.
Agra is located on the banks of the Yamuna – about 200 kms south-east of Delhi. With the new Taj Expressway, traveling from Delhi to Agra has become a smooth and beautiful experience.
Besides the iconic Taj, this city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh also boasts of two more UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri (close to Agra). These majestic Mughal era structures are high on the priority list of most visitors coming to India, and for good reason.
While the history of Agra is closely aligned with the Mughals, the city was in fact established much earlier. The first mention that the place finds is in the Mahabharata – where it is referred to by the name Agrevana.
