India Gate

Delhi is a city like few others in the world. It is many cities within a city – Delhi has been built and destroyed and built again several times, at least seven times if we go by modern historical records.

In central Delhi in the area around the India Gate c-hexagon, you will broad, leafy avenues. This is Lutyens’ Delhi – the modern British capital city founded in 1930. Adjacent to it, also in the central part of Delhi is the old city. This is the city founded by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

The two markets of Connaught Place (in the British city) and Chandni Chowk (opposite the Red Fort in Old Delhi) are a stark contrast to each other.

Towards the south lie the more modern city that has developed after India’s independence. The Asian Games of 1982 was a major catalyst in the modernization of south Delhi, which is where the games were held.

Delhi is replete with history and heritage, and a serious explorer would need months, if not years, to fully appreciate the rich offerings of the city. Besides this, India’s capital city is famed for its food – especially its street food of the old city.
